The Historian
My fascination with history began long before I became a writer. I studied Geography and Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen, and over the years my research has taken me from ancient landscapes and forgotten archives to the battlefields of Britain and the intelligence files of the Second World War. As a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, the Royal Society of Arts, and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, I remain driven by the same question that first inspired me: what stories have we overlooked?
The Author
The idea for The Willoughby Papers grew from a simple belief, that history still has secrets to reveal. Many of my stories begin with genuine historical mysteries, overlooked documents, or intriguing fragments of evidence before asking, "What if?" The result is historical fiction firmly rooted in real places, real events and the enduring mysteries that continue to challenge our understanding of Britain's past.
The Storyteller
Whether I'm writing a novel, delivering a lecture or researching in an archive, my aim is always the same: to make history engaging, accessible and thought-provoking. I believe the past is at its most compelling when we ask questions, challenge accepted narratives and follow the evidence wherever it leads. After all, history promises no happy endings, but it does offer excellent stories.
